Week 4

More Storms & Fins

In a previous post, I mentioned that I lost another fin and only had a long 12 inch fin left. Unfortunately, the long fin was a mistake in shallow waters and rapids. In some rocky rapids the fin broke off, and took most of my fin box with it. Add wind & rain to that and I might as well be on a tilt-a-whirl... The Storms & Fins saga continues...

Wildlife & Decisions

One of the great things about being on the river is the connection with nature. I complain about the storms and the wind, but the people and the surroundings are amazing. The storms are frustrating because of the work it takes to push on and make good time. But time is irrelevant when you're connecting with nature... I just need to remember that every now and then.

At this time, I am contemplating finding a ride to Tobacco Gardens in Watford, MT. I've ordered the materials needed to repair my fin box to be sent there. Without a fin, navigating the river, current, wind, and storms is becoming more of a challenge than I expected. I don't have far to go, but it's taking forever to get there. Spinning in circles isn't cutting it! I need to get this repaired so I can push on.

While stopped for a storm, I found what I thought was a dying calf. It was just very young and very hungry. I was able to locate the rancher it belonged to and, in turn, was invited to dinner that evening. I was expecting an awesome steak dinner... ya know, Montana = Beef... but the rancher didn't have any beef prepared for that night. What he did have is a recently butchered pig, and it was the biggest and best pork chop I've ever had!

Anyway, still contemplating that ride. While I do, I thought I share some of the wildlife and scenes I've encountered along the way. A little bit of fun...
